Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste EIS Information Center
This Web site is the online center for public information and involvement in the Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste Environmental Impact Statement (GTCC LLW EIS).
The United States Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Environmental Management (EM), will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for disposal of Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste (GTCC LLW). The EIS will evaluate potential alternatives involving various disposal methods for application at several DOE sites and generic commercial sites. This web site is the online center for public information and involvement in the EIS process.
The public scoping comment period for the GTCC EIS ended September 21, 2007. All comments received or postmarked by Friday, September 21, 2007 will be considered. Comments received or postmarked after that date will be considered to the extent practicable.
Public Meeting Presentation and Posters Available
The DOE presentation and posters shown at public meetings for the GTCC EIS are now available for downloading/browsing under Other Documents on the Documents page.
Public Participation
Public participation in the GTCC LLW EIS is important. This Web site provides information and services to help you participate in the EIS process.
Getting Involved
How to participate in the EIS process, public meeting information, and how public comments are used in the EIS process. You may also submit comments on the scope of the EIS and provide information about issues important to you.
Section 3(b)(1)(D) of the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Amendments Act of 1985 (LRWPAA, Public Law 99-240) assigned the Federal Government responsibility for the disposal of GTCC LLW that results from activities licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Agreement States. The LLRWPAA also directed that such waste be disposed in a facility licensed by the NRC. There are no facilities currently licensed by NRC for disposal of GTCC LLW. DOE is the Federal agency responsible for the disposal of GTCC LLW and intends to evaluate a range of reasonable alternatives for its disposal in the upcoming EIS.
DOE also generates wastes comparable to GTCC LLW (referred to in the EIS as DOE GTCC-like waste) that may not have an identified disposal path, and is addressing disposal of these wastes in the EIS. Use of the term "DOE GTCC-like waste" does not have the intent or effect of creating a new classification of radioactive waste. The EIS will meet requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and DOE policies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will participate as a cooperating agency in the preparation of the EIS, and the NRC will participate as a commenting agency.
