How Your Scoping Comments Will Be Used

Public scoping comments and information are used to help determine the scope of the Draft EIS and to identify issues of concern.

The public scoping comment period is the first (but not last) major public involvement opportunity for the Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste EIS. Public scoping comments will be taken into consideration to determine relevant issues that will influence the scope of the environmental analysis and the alternatives.

After public input from the public scoping period has been gathered, DOE will categorize comments into those issues within the scope of the EIS and those that are considered outside the scope of the EIS. Issues considered within the scope of the Draft EIS will then be incorporated into the alternatives and analysis performed. DOE will provide an explanation in the Draft EIS as to why an issue is considered to be outside the scope of the EIS. A summary of scoping comments received will be included in the Draft EIS, which will be available on this Web site.

Comment Consideration

Written and oral comments will be given equal weight, and DOE will consider all comments received or postmarked by September 21, 2007 in defining the scope of this EIS. Comments received or postmarked after that date will be considered to the extent practicable.
